Norwegian documentary from 2016. Einar Gerhardsen had to resign as prime minister after the debate in the Norwegian Parliament about the mining accident that caused 21 deaths in 1962. But the history of Kings Bay goes all the way back to 1916, when Kings Bay Kull Company was established to conduct coal mining on Svalbard. This was also the base for Roald Amundsen’s attempt to fly over the North Pole with his airship “Norge”. The mines of Ny-Ålesund are now shut down, and in its place a research village has sprung out, delivering globally important information about the Arctic.
